Two Very Different Stories Published Today

Monday, 1 July 2013

A couple of very different stories of mine see the light of day today. The first is Threads, a fantasy story involving a barbarian horde and embroidery. It's published today by Bards and Sages Quarterly.

Meanwhile, literary flash story A Box of Photographs is up at Fabula Argentea. This is free to read here. The magazine very kindly describes it as a "masterful piece of writing". I hope you agree...

Oh, and just to round off a good day on the short fiction front, Stupefying Stories have bought my comic horror story Professor Pandemonium's Train of Terror. This marks my fourth sale to them, so a good day all round so far...

  2. Congrats!!

Curious: how much time do you devote to finding markets? And how do you divide your time? You seem to do so much!!

    1. Thanks, Julie!

I don't spend a vast amount of time researching markets: I generally have a list of places I'd like to submit to in my head, and then I use something like The Grinder if I need to.

As to how I divide my time - badly! I have a job and a young family, so writing doesn't always get too much of a look-in. I try and set aside an hour each evening for writing, and then any other moments I can grab throughout the day...

  6. Nice work, Simon. Your acceptances seem to be accelerating every time I check in with you.

I enjoyed the flash. Lovely, lovely I'd call it horror, but gentle horror. I remember my Grandma always asking me, 'Are you courting?'

    1. I'll never be able to keep up with you I'm sure. A fascinating reponse, though - I never think of myself as a horror writer.

  7. You make me feel guilty for all my short story starts that go no-where, lol.

Loved the ghost story in Pictures. Well developed and paced. The POV was excellent, and no, I didn't need to know his name. If he'd named himself it would have felt contrived for the reader benefit. That single connection to the house, and specifically the pictures that invoked his memories, was enough to "see" the character's corporeal life. Well done.

    1. Thanks for your feedback, Donna. Fascinating that you and Deborah saw this as some sort of ghost story - in my mind it was pretty much a story about Alzheimer's. I love the way readers take their own meanings from stories.
