N is for Numinous
Such a lovely word. For quite a while I didn't know what it meant and assumed it was maybe something like luminous. Or maybe numerous. I like the way our brains try to fill in like that. But in fact, the word means mysterious, awe-inspring or supernatural. It comes from the latin numen, meaning divine will.
You can also say "numinosity". Now there's a good word to drop into the conversation today ...
Archaeopteryx Blunderbuss Chthonic Dreadnought Entropy Fulgurite Gargantua Humbucking Ichthyic Juggernaut Kappa Labyrinthine Megrim Numinous
What a wondrous word! Yay! take care

Awesome word!
ReplyDeleteAt first read, I thought it might actually have something to do with numistatics -- coins or currency.
Thanks, Old Kitty!
ReplyDeleteChris - I wonder if they're related? Hard to see how but it's funny how words evolve.
