3rd Place Prize in the It's Only a Number Competition

Sunday, 1 May 2011

Delighted to report that my flash story The Number Six has ranked third in Rebecca Emin's It's Only a Number competition today. Rebecca is a fellow Ether author and prolific flash/short story/novel writer. Thanks Rebecca!

My prize is to be a copy of the Yesterday anthology of short stories, which includes Rebecca's own story Ben. Very much looking forward to reading it ...

  1. Very well done Simon! My judges really had their work cut out but I think they chose some wonderful stories for the top six!

  6. I was just going to say how much it cheers me to visit your blog (even if your stories are depressing) because you always have great publishing news.

While the rest of us slog away with our weighty tomes, gathering rejection after rejection, you produce these beautifully crafted little gems that people actually want to publish.

This is a lesson to young writers everywhere. Start with the short stuff. If you're good at it, you may never be tempted to write a novel and you can have happy publishing experiences, too!

  8. Anne,

Glad I cheer you up! Are my stories depressing? I can assure you there are some more uplifting ones coming up.

But yes, short fiction can definitely be an end in itself. That said, I am feverishly beavering away at editing my novel ...
