It's been a glorious spring so far here in the UK, and the bluebells are currently carpeting our woodlands in spectacular fashion. Here's a picture I took today, which really doesn't do the scene justice at all.
I mention all this not only as an excuse to show you this picture. Because, as it happens, I've also been editing a chapter of Hedge Witch today ("Tanglewood") in which some of my characters travel through a wood very much like this, the same bluebells and dappled shade, the same trees. I love it when that happens: I know it's coincidence but it feels like synchronicity. We didn't get attacked by any undead horrors though, which always spoils a family picnic I find ...
I think there's a lot to be said for letting research "come to you" : to just keeping your mind open to what's around you. It's surprising how often material relevant to what you are writing jumps out at you. Do you find that too?

Just beautiful, and that picture is going to inspire a scene in my own rewrite.
ReplyDeleteI miss bluebell woods.
'synchronicity'! You old hippie, you!
ReplyDeleteDonna,
ReplyDeleteGlad you liked the picture. And I'm sure I'd miss them too.
Sue,
ReplyDeleteWhat do you mean, "old"?!
Awwww there really is nothing like a wood carpeted in bluebells!!! Lovely!! Unless it's a wood carpeted in ransoms!! I love that too!! Oooh and not forgetting forget me nots!! Oh spring!!! I love spring!!
ReplyDeleteNo undead horrors please though! take care
x
Old Kitty,
ReplyDeleteYes, 'tis a glorious time of year, most definitely.
I love the woods and live near several. I like the feeling of aloneness you can get amongst all the trees and wildlife. Does that make sense? They make me remember how small I am compared to nature.
ReplyDeleteEllie Garratt
Ellie,
ReplyDeleteIt makes perfect sense to me. We live near lots of woods too, which is something I'm very grateful for.
OOooooo, gorgeous pic! It looks enchanting. I can see why a place like this would be in your book.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, I see pictures that make me think of scenes, times, other worlds....I love nature!
Beautiful photo, Simon. And I agree; it's best to be aware of the moment as a writer -- and as a human being.
ReplyDeleteWords Crafter,
ReplyDeleteYes, it is glorious, no doubt about it.
Thanks, Milo. And, of course, your wider point about reacting just as a human is well made.
ReplyDeleteIt's a beautiful photo, Simon. Thanks for sharing it. I agree about keeping your mind open - that eureka! moment could be just around the corner, or around that tree or...
ReplyDeleteCongrats on being an April Witch/Warlock!
Thanks on both counts, Madeline!
ReplyDeleteThat happens to me! I'll be walking or reading or watching something and I'll be hit with an idea or piece of inspiration for my writing . . .
ReplyDeleteI love the picture!
Golden,
ReplyDeleteYes, it's wonderful when that happens. Mind you, I generally find I've failed to bring a notebooks with me ...
Hey Simon.
ReplyDeleteJust stopping by to pile on praise for your wonderful witchiness at Write 1 Sub 1. You inspire me, much like this photo did when I clicked over here at 1AM (from across the pond). Imagine my thrill at seeing green life in the dead of the night. Uplifted, I head off to the pillow, and dreams.
Hi Steve,
ReplyDeleteHope the photo helped give you sweet dreams.
Thanks.
It's been spectacular about the place, though where I live, the lack of rain is taking its toll. Minor pan-bloob wither has knocked out most of the colour, which is a great shame.
ReplyDeleteWhirlochre,
ReplyDeleteYes, a drop of overnight rain now and then would be good ...
