L is for Labyrinthine
A pleasingly convoluted, serpentine word. Obviously, "like a labyrinth".
Did you know that, strictly speaking, labyrinths are different from mazes? Mazes have branches and forking paths while labyrinths are a single, winding path. So you can't get lost in a labyrinth. I don't know what Theseus was up to.
Mazes are puzzles but the point of a labyrinth is to make the long and possibly symbolic journey to the centre, contemplating your steps along the way ...

I'm clicking on random blogs that catch my eye from the A to Z Challenge site. I'm intrigued by spells and those who use them.
ReplyDeleteI sort of knew a labyrinth was a sort of spiritual journey and a maze is what you see when you visit Hampton Court! It's a most profound word! Yay! Take care

Daft Scots Lass - Thanks; Hope you enjoyed your visit.
ReplyDeleteOld Kitty - Indeed so!
You're right about Theseus--never thought about it much. The "labyrinth" at Crete must have been a maze, if he required that ball of string to get out. Huh...
ReplyDeleteI love the way the word "labyrinthine" feels in my mouth. Great word. :)
ReplyDeleteGuilie - Hmm, so maybe Theseus wasn't so bright?
ReplyDeleteMadeline - Me too.
I automatically thought of the David Bowie movie :)

Sarah - Oh yes, of course. Good film.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know that...thank you. That's what I like about the A to Z challenge, you learn stuff as well as networking.
ReplyDeleteMaria - I agree, you do learn all sorts of interesting things. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteThanks for an interesting post. The word also makes me think of the ear :)
ReplyDeleteI've always liked this word. It rolls of the tongue and conjures up the stuff of ancient myths!
ReplyDeleteHi Simon .. I didn't know the difference between a labyrinth and a maze - not sure why not! Now I must give both a go .. somewhere, sometime ..
ReplyDeleteGreat - thanks for the info .. cheers Hilary
Anita: That makes sense - there's a labyrinth there too isn't there?
ReplyDeleteNicole: Yep, I think that's why I like it, too.
Hilary: You should! Must be plenty of castles with mazes ...
