Honest Scrap Award!

Friday, 12 November 2010

Thanks to the Milo over at the marvellous in media res for the Honest Scrap Award, the receiving of which means I have to share ten random things about myself.

Sounds like fun on a Friday, so here goes. I should warn you, though, that I've made one of these up. Can you tell which?

  1. I've been a vegetarian since 1985.
  2. My earliest memory is of the giant skeleton of an Irish Elk looming over me.
  3. I wear a white gold wedding ring.
  4. News reporters' persistent refusal to use the word "epicentre" correctly drives me mad. Mad! Don't you have a dictionary?!
  5. I like thrash metal.
  6. My two daughters each share a name with a character from The Lord of the Rings.
  7. Despite being British I follow the New York Giants football team. Go G-Men!
  8. I'm allergic to antihistamines. Which is awkward.
  9. "I believe in live and let live. I believe you get what you give."
  10. ... but I'm also a bit of a grammar fascist. Misused apostrophe's upset me greatly.

There we go! And I also get to hand the award on. I hereby nominate the following fine blogs to receive the award :

fairyhedgehog for general all-round fantasticity, including her recent quoting of my #1 writing tip.

Old Kitty for all the comments, support, encouragement and entertainment. I know she's had the award already but I'm giving it her again!

My friend Andy at PC Games and Reviews. Essential gaming relief and an occasional victim of my grammar fascism. Sorry Andy!

  2. OK, my guess is you made them all up, except for being a vegetarian!

I'm hugely flattered by your passing on the award to me. I'm not actually doing awards at the moment, so I'll cop out and refer to an earlier post when I did it here.

  3. fairyhedgehog,

No worries. By all means cop out! And, for the record, nope I'm afraid I definitely only made one of them up ...

  4. Now come on, Simon, that was your cue to tell us which was which!

  5. What, and spoil the suspense? Make 'em laugh, make 'em cry, make 'em wait ...

  6. I'll have to go with the allergy one; that's got to be false. =]

  7. Milo,

Curses! I'd have gotten away with it if it wasn't for you pesky blog readers! Yep, you're right. The others are all true.

  8. CONGRATULATIONS with your fab award!!!! And I am trying to guess your childrens' (hahahah! see how I use my apostrophees/apostrophes. What is the plural?!?!?) names!!!! I'm guessing Frodo and Bilboa Baggins are not the names you had in mind..!! :-)

What word did the news people use instead of epicentre?!?! Crazy news people!!

Awww thank you so much for the nomination!! You're a STAR!!! Take care

  9. Old Kitty,

They're Galadriel and Eowyn. Just kidding! Actually one is Rosie (married Sam at the end) and one is Eleanor (Elanor was one of the children of Sam and Rosie). Quite small parts but then, grr, all the female parts are quite small in Tolkien aren't they?

The epicentre thing : they're always saying they're "at the epicentre" when they're clearly not. That implies the actual centre is somewhere undregound beneath them. Lazy journalism.

  10. I love that your daughters are named after LOTR characters. that is sooo cool! My daughter is named after an Austen character. Gotta keep the literary names going!

  11. Michelle,

Excellent! Now I'm wondering which Austen character ...

  12. Mr. Darcy. :) We named my daughter Darcy. Yeah, crazy. Hah. :)

  13. No, it's a fine name. Actually I know another Darcy : she's married to a relative of mine.

  14. What a great time to discover your blog, Simon. I learned so much about you. So how do your daughters like both having the middle name "Frodo?"

    Just joking.

The Irish Elk skeleton is just strange enough to be true. I think the straying from the path of accuracy is the thrash metal sentence.

Congratulations on the award. Come stroll by my blog. What you'll learn of me will by inference I'm afraid.

  15. Congratulations! And interesting list; do your daughters know they're named after Tolkien characters? Do they find it as cool as we do?

  16. Roland,

I shall certainly drop by. And. no, the thrash metal thing is true I'm afraid. But I don't think you can be allergic to antihistamines can you?

  17. Words Carfter,

One's too young to know who Tolkien is. The other's cool with it. At least we didn't pick Sauron ...

I'd love to know what you think.
