In the loft, Dan found his guitar, untouched in 30 years. He strummed its remaining strings, smiling. He had time to play it again now.
Flash Fiction Friday is a weekly post of a work of fiction small enough to appear on Twitter etc.

Loved how the first sentence grabbed me. Wanted to know what had happened in those 30 years.
ReplyDeleteKittie,
ReplyDeleteThanks for that. I think that's often the trick with these very short stories - suggesting a back story that is left for the reader to fill in.
Simon.
Well, your three lines tell us that once Dan played guitar, then life and all its responsibilities took his attention away from doing something he loved.
ReplyDeleteNow, freed from those responsibilities...
So, well done for saying so much with such an economy of words!
Marisa,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the feedback. I had in mind a particular reason for his now being on his own, free to play, but obviously there could be lost of reasons. leaving the reader free to decide for themselves.
Wow. Nice. I'm more used to Flash Fiction being around 250-500 words, so this seemed really short, but still quite good. I really liked the emotion it stirred within me as a reader, thanks Simon!
ReplyDeleteYou can read one of mine here , if you're interested.
Matthew,
ReplyDeleteThanks for that - it is short, I agree. The idea is that its short enough for a tweet. I'm off to look at yours now!
Awwww! Well here's to Dan and his guitar!! Good for him!
ReplyDeletetake care
x
Old Kitty,
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely! Maybe he can start up that band he always meant to now?
Play it, Dan. Play it.
ReplyDeleteThis is really touching. I bet Dan's first song will be a nostalgic one.
ReplyDeleteWhoa! This actually *almost* happened to me this week! After about 20 years I pulled my dusty guitar out of the closet for my son. He started lessons. I strummed a terribly out of tune G chord before putting it aside for him.
ReplyDeleteThomas - yep, reckon so. If he can remember how to do the darn chords (speaking as someone struggling to learn the guitar ...)
ReplyDeleteSuzie,
ReplyDeleteThat's actually pretty amazing - as is you being able to recall how to do a G after 20 years!
Nice one. It works because of what is left unsaid :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks Kate! I do like to think I'm quite good at unsaying things ...
